School of Design Module â PD 6002 â Human Factors in Health Systems Presentation â Role of human factors and user centered medical device design on patient quality of life. Background Many medical devices are developed to treat clinical conditions, but often do not sufficiently consider the context of use and the needs of the users of the device. Also, many medical devices are designed for medical professionals to use, whereas other medical devices are designed for patients to use themselves. Patient quality of life is heavily affected by treatment outcome of medical devices, while also considering ability to perform activities of daily living, maintain social interactions, among other factors. In some circumstances medical devices are not designed and retailed to address medical conditions as the prevalence rate for the illnesses are too low to support commercial development. Objective The objective of this presentation is to address the topic of the role of human factors and user centered design of medical devices to specifically address patient quality of life. The presentation will address how quality of life can be assessed relative to medical device design, and from that what design requirements the users have from associated products. Requirements 1. Provide an outline of the role of human factors and user centered design in usability of medical devices, including reference to good practice guides on this. 2. Detail a prominent method for assessing patient quality of life. 3. Provide details of an example from the literature or the grey literature regarding a study of medical device design targeting patient quality of life. 4. Specifically detail the patientâs design requirements from the medical device which were related to their quality of life. 5. For the medical device addressed in #3 above, summarise findings from 2 other studies regarding quality of life challenges for these patients. Give a 20 minute presentation addressing the details above. Presentation tips ⢠Aim to use as little text as possible in the actual slides. If there is a lot of text on the slides the audience will tend to read them instead of listening to you. ⢠Use graphics to address the context of the point you want to make, and possibly supplement with text as key point reminders. ⢠If presenting any illustrations/tables, ensure they are clear. ⢠Avoid just reading text line by line from your slides. ⢠If you do not have full sentences on your slides you cannot then read them. Paraphrase! ⢠Practice your presentation out loud beforehand. ⢠Ensure you do not go over time. Grading 10% of the module. ⢠Presentation slide clarity and layout as per the requirements: 5% ⢠Presentation skills: 5%
