You will now evaluate a hypothetical health intervention with a 1-year time horizon comparing two interventions (Intervention A and Intervention B). Before the intervention, the average individual had a HRQoL of 0.5. If they choose to take intervention A, their risk of immediate death is 1%. There is no risk of death from taking intervention B. If they take Intervention A, they have a 60% chance of complete health with a HRQoL of 1.0 and a 39% chance of a slight improvement to a HRQoL of 0.6. If they choose intervention B, again they have no chance of death, but only a 40% chance of complete health, but no chance of a slight improvement, only a 60 percent chance of no effect. To calculate the quality-adjusted life years, you would multiply the expected HRQoL for each arm of the tree by 1 given the one year time horizon. Intervention A costs $20,000 and Intervention B costs $15,000.
